I’m on the road a lot. This is the nature of my work. And on the road I meet a lot of new people. The conversation eventually gets to “What do you do?” and I say, “I consult and teach networking.” Now the next question is always, “Is that computer networking or people networking?” since many of the people that I meet are sales oriented, people networking is important to them.
I say, “Funny that you should ask because I see
computer and people networking as the same thing!”. I draw a stick picture
of two people next to each other. When my children drew this I would say, “Don’t forget their ears!”.
People networking is done mainly mouth to ear and ear to mouth.
Other technologies have led the way for better people communication with
business fortunes following.
Transcontinental Railroad
Now it was 1829 and the invention of the steam locomotive for iron rails. It wasn’t until 1869 that the transcontinental railway was completed. All of a sudden, what used to take months now took days to accomplish. This technological improvement also improved person-to-person networking. This, in turn, created a sudden improvement in business. Overnight the economy was booming. They say that prairie towns sprang up in one week’s time.
People mortgaged and sold their homes to buy railroad stock. The rest is history.

Telephony
Soon it was 1876 and the invention of the telephone. But it wasn’t until the early 1920’s until we could talk to almost everyone. This was because the “network”, now called the Public Switched Telephone Network wasn’t invented until then. Again, almost overnight, business was good; people mortgaged homes to buy telephone stock. Again, less than 10 years later and the Great Depression.
Computers
Invented in the mid to late 50’s, a 40-year development and the invention of both e-mail and the Internet made the computer a worthwhile communications tool. Person-to-person communications again and a new business tool. People, not learning from past mistakes and the historical reference, mortgaged homes and bought stock on credit. A 10-year boom followed by a recession that we are currently in.
Wireless
Interestingly, wireless has its debut in 1896, as Marconi was able to make the wireless telegraph work. It has been with us ever since in many forms. It wasn’t until the last 10 years with the development of the public telephone network, computer networks and the inclusion of wireless telephones that this has become a tool for person-to-person communications. It is still developing and within a few years it will replace totally landline communications. This
technology push continues to fuel our current growth and is the leading edge of our
current business boom.
Video over the net
While
Voice over IP is a cost improvement over early telephony, video has been
elusive. The Internet was not designed for lossless, real time packets. It
is today's challenge but can easily turn into tomorrows big "person to person"
winner.
Three Dimensions
Next item, 3 dimensional, full-color displays! Yes, these beauties will revolutionize the person-to-person concept. But more than this, they will revolutionize the entertainment and Internet services. The 3 dimensions are because of holographic technology (needs lasers to work) and blue lasers. Continuous blue lasers are relatively new (4 to 5 years) and are an outgrowth of the telecommunications industry fiber optic business. Fujitsu and Nippon are the prime sources although there are several other sources now. Bell Labs did the prototype in ’99.
This is the framework for new technologies and how they will come to fruition. If it benefits or enhances person-to-person communications then it is big. If not, well, maybe big but not as big.
Leading Edge Raw Materials
This is a list of current raw materials that have changed our technological capabilities. Notice, as you read about these elements on the web how they were not thought to have many uses.
